Stäubenkapelle
Eventful Circular Trail
The Stäubenkapelle near Gurtnellen is set against a dazzling backdrop, with a rock face below and towering pine trees all around. It is located at the end of an incredible hiking trail.
From Gurtnellen-Wiler, an hour’s hike through the forest, over bridges and past waterfalls, leads you to the little chapel, built in 1910. There is a picnic area halfway along the trail where you can stop to rest and relax.
Where the Stäubenkapelle is now, there once stood a pine tree that bore the image of the Virgin Mary. The trunk of this pine tree was made into the altar, which still stands in the same spot today. Christians originally built the chapel around the dying tree in an attempt to protect it from the Wilerplanggen avalanche.
